About Navratri

In Indian tradition, Navratri is based on stories about goddess Durga’s ability to conquer negative energy -- manifested by the demon Mahishasur. These stories represent the empowering feminine, creative energy within all of us.

The nine days and nights (Navratri means nine nights) of events and rituals culminate with Durga emerging powerful and radiant and in victory. These rituals serve to remind us of our profound ability to overcome our deepest fears and limitations, and to create and share things beyond our self-imposed limitations.

Astrologically, Navratri follows the 16 day Pitru Paksha, which are ancestral prayers. This is a time that signifies overcoming inner negative tendencies and ushering in many victorious and light-filled celebrations after it. The brightest festivals in India, Dussehra, Diwali and the Indian wedding season, follow shortly after.

You are more powerful than you think!

Here at Akhanda Yoga Institute we are celebrating the many Yogic tools that can be used to intensify your energy practices during these powerful 9 nights and 10 days.
